What Games Should you Play?

Learn about some of the more popular poker games in the world: Texas Hold'em, Omaha Hold'em, Seven Card Stud and Five Card Stud.

Texas Hold'em

Texas Hold'em is a community poker game. Every player receives two hole cards. The first betting round takes place (Pre-Flop). Three community cards are dealt face-up and the second betting round takes place (Flop). Another community cards dealt face-up and a betting round occurs (Turn) and the last community card is dealt followed by the final betting round (River). Each player now has two hole cards and five community cards that can be used in any combination to form a five-card hand. A player that succeeds to combine the highest poker hand wins the pot.

Omaha Hold'em

Omaha is very similar to Texas Hold'em, but players receive four hole cards and must use exactly two of them together with any three of the community cards to form the final hand. Community cards are dealt the same way as in Texas Hold'em with a betting round following each new turn. However, standard Omaha High poker is much less popular than its High/Low variation. The most common way to play Omaha is in High/Low split format and with 8 as a qualifier. The full name for such game is Omaha High/Low 8 or Better, which can also be spelled as Omaha Hi/Lo 8b. In this game, players who have an 8-high or lower hand play Low and others play High. The player with the highest High hand wins half of the pot and the player with the lowest Low hands wins another half.

Seven Card Stud

Players are dealt two face-down and one face-up card. A betting round takes place. Another face-up card is dealt to each player. Another betting round. A face-up card. A betting round. A face-up card. A betting round. A face-down card. The final betting round. In the end every player receives two down-cards, four up-cards and another down-card and five betting rounds occur. A player that combines the highest poker hand out of his seven cards wins the pot. As well as Omaha, Seven Card Stud can be played in High/Low split format, but the standard High version is more popular.

Five Card Stud

The same as Seven Card Stud, but is played with five cards dealt to each player in the following sequence: two cards (one down, one up), up card, up card, up card. A betting round follows each deal, so in the end each player has one down and four up cards and four betting rounds are played.
